How accurate is FlightAware tracking? ›

The data displayed on FlightAware.com is typically 30 seconds delayed from real-time. Maps animate the aircraft position toward the last known position. An aircraft's position on the map may lag real-time by 1-2 minutes. Depending on the data source, updates are usually one to four times a minute.

You can track your flight or a loved one's flight with our flight tracker. It's also available on the JetBlue mobile app. Flight status information is displayed with your search so you can see if a flight is on time or delayed.

Not being show on Flightaware just means they are on one of the block lists maintained by FAA and EASA. There are military encrypted transponders, that's something you can't receive locally.

Transponders can generate errors by transmitting random or incorrect position information, like the Air Canada flight below. This leads to impossible looking flight paths that often contain a jagged, switch-back look.

Between July 2022 to July 2023, JetBlue's reliability ratings were fairly middle of the road when compared to other airlines. The airline had a tarmac delay rate of 0.54 out of every 10,000 flights and canceled 1.88% of its flights — which is about the average compared with other major carriers.

When flying JetBlue, the airline may offer compensation for your delayed flight, but not in all circ*mstances. In general, JetBlue doesn't offer compensation for weather delays, but delays due to waiting on airline staff, a mechanical issue or other “controllable” events may qualify for compensation.

First, the aircraft may not be fitted with an ADS-B transponder, meaning it is not compatible with our receiver network. Second, if the aircraft is fitted with a Mode S transponder and not visible, it may be flying in areas with little or no MLAT coverage.

Information about a small number of flights may be limited or blocked based on requests from owners or operators via third-party services, such as the FAA LADD. Some high profile aircraft, such as Air Force One are not displayed. Most other aircraft subject to restriction are shown as anonymized by aircraft type.

It's not that difficult, but the information is only as good as the data provided by the individual airlines flight operations tracking. Short answer… yes, it's reasonably accurate at any particular instance.

Who is generally more accurate? Usually they are similar, with some edge to FR24 with more live info. I was tracking a flight (BA603) - flightaware stated it had already flown more than 100 miles (though without any details - e.g. speed, altitude), but FR24 showing it having just taken off.
